What fractional AI leadership looks like in practice

Most growing businesses don't need a full-time head of AI. They need someone senior who has actually built these systems, who can sit in the room when decisions are made, and who is accountable for a roadmap rather than a slide deck. That is what fractional AI leadership from Pro AI is: James Longbottom works part-time inside your business as its AI lead.

    In the room

Attends board and leadership meetings as your AI adviser. Translates what is possible into what is worth doing, and what it will cost, in language the whole table understands.

    A roadmap you own

A written, prioritised plan of where AI and automation will pay back in your business — which processes, in which order, with what each is worth in hours and pounds. Reviewed every month as the business changes.

    Hands on when it counts

Vendor and tool selection, governance and data policies, supplier oversight, and the option to have Pro AI build the first systems itself rather than hand the roadmap to someone else.

    How it works

    1. Automation Audit first. A two-hour workshop with the people who do the work, at your premises or online, followed by a written map of where time is being lost and what each fix is worth. This is the same fixed-price audit every Pro AI engagement starts with.
    2. Roadmap and business case. The audit becomes a 6–12 month roadmap with costs, savings and the order of work, presented to your leadership team.
    3. A fixed number of days each month, agreed with you. Board meetings, supplier meetings, reviews of work in progress, and the questions that come up between them. Priced against the business case, not a rate card.
    4. Systems that report their own value. Anything built under the roadmap reports the hours it saves every week, so the leadership team can see whether the plan is working.

    Who it suits

Businesses of roughly 20 to 200 people that have real operational work to automate but no one senior in-house to own it: professional-services firms handling documents and compliance, construction and property companies with paperwork across several systems, manufacturers and retailers with data in too many places. If your leadership team is being sold AI by every supplier you have and can't tell which pitches are worth taking, this is for you.

Fractional AI leadership — common questions

What is a fractional AI leader?

A senior AI and automation specialist who works part-time inside your business rather than being hired full-time. You get someone in leadership meetings who has built these systems, owns your AI roadmap, and is accountable for results — at a fraction of the cost of a full-time hire.

How is this different from an AI consultancy project?

A project ends. Fractional leadership is ongoing: a fixed number of days each month, a roadmap that is reviewed as the business changes, and someone on your side of the table when suppliers pitch to you. It also means the person advising you is the person who can build what they recommend.

    What does it cost?

It depends on the business case. Every engagement starts with a fixed-price Automation Audit, which produces the roadmap and the savings it should generate; the monthly commitment is then sized and priced against that. Our package prices are published on the York page and the contact page.

Do you need to be on site?

Pro AI is based in York and meets clients in person anywhere in the UK. Most fractional engagements mix in-person leadership meetings with remote working between them.

Can you build the systems as well as advise on them?

Yes. Pro AI builds custom automations, AI agents and document-processing systems, so the roadmap can move straight into delivery without a hand-off. Every system we build reports the hours it saves.
